Kaitlyn Tucek | Mise en Place

August 19 - September 30, 2023

Opening Reception: August 19, 2023 from 3 - 6 PM, 1412 Wazee Street, Denver Colorado 80202

For her inaugural show in K Contemporary’s Project Space, Kaitlyn Tucek subverts norms, particularly around gender and the gaze. Mise en Place is a sensual and complex presentation of power dynamics and domination. The exhibition celebrates a female gaze and a femme aesthetic, inviting guests into a warm and pleasurable fantasy where women are primary and empowered, even if portrayed in domestic settings.

Mise en Place is the precursor to an experiential event conceived by Tucek. Funded by the Radical Waves Project, “The Dinner Party” is presented in partnership with the Dairy Arts Center, Boulder, CO and K Contemporary, Denver, CO. This one-night immersive happening takes place on September 9, 2023 and explores the confluence of the visual, performing, and culinary arts. All participating artists identify as female or non-binary. The event will take place at a private home in Boulder County. Additional details and tickets can be found here.

K Contemporary Director, Jennifer Berry, comments, “Riffing on the translation of her show’s French title, Kaitlyn’s paintings ‘put in place’ the ingredients for a female-identifying and non-binary gaze. She uses highly gendered imagery to point out the phallacy – pun intended – of the very power imbalances she asks us to critique.”
